Kindness Starts Here...

At Eden Prairie Montessori, we know preschoolers are not only full of curiosity and energy, but they’re also capable of something truly special: caring for others. Even at ages 3, 4, and 5, children can begin learning what it means to help their friends, family, and community. And the best part? They learn it while having fun!

Little Hands, Big Impact

In a Montessori classroom, helping starts small. And that’s exactly the point. Preschoolers practice responsibility and empathy every day by doing things like:

  • Wiping up spills after snack
  • Pouring water for a friend
  • Helping a classmate put away materials
  • Caring for classroom plants or pets

These simple actions teach children that their choices matter and that helping others feels good.

Fun Ways Preschoolers Can Help the Community

Even our youngest learners can make a difference beyond the classroom. Some age-appropriate ways preschoolers can help include:

  • Making colorful cards for local hospitals or senior centers
  • Donating gently used toys or books to a local charity
  • Collecting seeds or planting flowers for a community garden
  • Preparing simple care packages with snacks, toiletries, socks or other useful small items for those in need
  • Participating in a neighborhood clean-up or helping pick up litter at a local park

Each activity gives children a sense of accomplishment and shows them that even small acts of kindness matter.

Learning by Example

Preschoolers also learn by watching adults and older children. When teachers model kindness and helpfulness, children naturally imitate these behaviors. They start noticing when someone needs help and offer to lend a hand. These skills will benefit them for a lifetime!

Bringing Community Lessons Home

Parents can reinforce these lessons in playful, everyday ways:

  • Invite your child to help prepare a meal or set the table
  • Walk or bike around the neighborhood picking up litter together
  • Read books about helping, sharing, and caring for others
  • Encourage small acts of kindness, like helping a sibling or neighbor

Even the tiniest gestures help preschoolers see themselves as part of a caring community.

At Eden Prairie Montessori, teaching preschoolers about community is just as important as teaching letters, numbers, or practical life skills. When children learn to care for others at this age, they build empathy, confidence, and a sense of purpose that lasts a lifetime.
