Collaborative Efforts for Optimal Development

Montessori classrooms are commonly referred to as prepared environments. Care and attention are given to creating a learning environment that will reinforce the children’s independence and intellectual development. Our toddler classrooms include 20 toddlers, 1 teacher, and 2 assistants for individualized care and attention.

The room is set up to facilitate toddler discussion and to stimulate collaborative learning. Students become involved with their work. The teacher works with one or two students at a time, advising, presenting new lessons and quietly observing student work. Our toddler classroom’s environment in Eden Prairie includes “work” which assists in promoting concentration, coordination, independence and order.

For toddlers ages 16 to 36 months, the available work spans multiple categories, including:

  • Sensorial
  • Practical Life (Real Life Activities)
  • Language
  • Pre-Math (Concrete and Conceptual)
  • Science
  • Geography and Social History
  • Art, Music and Movement
  • Outdoor / Nature Time

We use fun activities to stimulate toddler classroom learning including painting, coloring, tactile activities, story time, reading, and outdoor playtime. Through each activity, your child will develop useful development skills to help them gain independence and care for themselves. As the year progresses, each toddler is given developmentally-appropriate opportunities for increased responsibility, freedom, positive choices and active learning.

With exclusive Montessori teaching materials, toddlers are able to thrive.

Potty-Training Preparedness

Our toddler potty-training method is a 5-step program that allows your child to advance at his or her own pace. After each accident-free day, your toddler will advance to the next step. This helps them achieve independence without feeling overwhelmed with the process.

  • What is the focus of the Toddler curriculum?

Our Toddler curriculum centers on developing independence, language, and movement. Children engage in practical life activities such as pouring, transferring, food preparation, and care of self and environment. Language development is supported through rich conversation, singing, reading, and materials that build vocabulary. Fine and gross motor skills are refined through activities that challenge and engage the body. Social development occurs naturally as children learn to work alongside peers and practice grace and courtesy with gentle guidance.

  • How do you approach toilet learning?

We view toilet learning as a natural developmental process rather than something to be rushed or forced. When a child shows physical and psychological readiness, we work in partnership with families to support this important milestone. Our toddler bathrooms are designed with child-sized toilets and sinks to facilitate independence. We approach accidents with calm reassurance, recognizing them as part of the learning process rather than failures.

  • How do you handle separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety is a normal part of development, particularly for toddlers. We create a gradual transition process where parents and children can get comfortable with the environment and caregivers before separation. We encourage short separations at first, gradually extending the time as the child builds trust. We honor the child's feelings while confidently reassuring them that parents always return. Our consistent caregivers build secure attachments that help toddlers feel safe in their parents' absence.

  • What is the daily schedule in the Toddler program?

While we remain flexible to meet the needs of young children, our Toddler program does follow a more predictable schedule than the Nido:

    • Morning arrival and greeting

    • Individual choice of activities

    • Group time for songs and stories

    • Snack time (with children participating in preparation and cleanup)

    • Outdoor exploration

    • Lunch

    • Rest time

    • Afternoon activities and outdoor time

    • Departure

This consistent routine helps toddlers develop a sense of security and order, which is particularly important during this stage of development.

  • How do you support language development?

Language development is a priority in our Toddler program. Our guides use precise, rich vocabulary and clear, respectful communication. We name objects specifically rather than using vague terms. We read books, sing songs, and engage in conversation throughout the day. Materials in the classroom specifically support language development, such as objects to name, matching activities, and simple books.
