Embracing a more thoughtful and minimalist approach to play...

In a world where toy aisles are overflowing and online shopping makes it easy to buy more with a single click, many parents find themselves asking: Do children really need all these toys to learn and grow?

At Eden Prairie Montessori Learning Center, we often see the opposite is true. LESS TOYS can actually lead to MORE LEARNING! By embracing a more thoughtful and minimalist approach to play, children gain deeper focusstronger creativity, and greater independence.

Let’s explore why...

The Problem with Too Many Toys

It’s natural to want to provide children with every possible opportunity to learn. But when a child is surrounded by too many toys, something unexpected happens: their ability to engage meaningfully can decrease.

Research and classroom observations show that:

- Children become overwhelmed by too many choices
- They move quickly from one toy to another
- Their attention span shortens
- Imaginative play becomes less sustained

Instead of diving deeply into an activity, children often skim the surface of many.

Why Fewer Toys Support Deeper Learning

1. Improved Focus and Concentration

When there are
fewer options available, children are more likely to:

- Spend
longer periods on a single activity
- Explore it in
greater depth
- Repeat actions, which
strengthens brain development

This mirrors what we see in
Montessori classrooms, where carefully selected materials are displayed in an intentional, uncluttered way.

2. More Creativity, Not Less

It may seem counterintuitive, but
fewer toys often spark more imagination.

When a child has
one set of blocks instead of five and open-ended materials instead of single-purpose toys, they begin to invent, adapt, and create. A simple object can become anything they can imagine!

3. Stronger Decision-Making Skills

With fewer choices, children practice
making decisions with intention. Instead of being overwhelmed, they choose more confidently, stay committed to their activity and develop a sense of responsibility for their environment

4. Greater Independence

A
simplified environment allows children to see all their options clearly. They can easily access and return items independently and take ownership of their play.

This is a
core principle of Montessori education: empowering children to do things for themselves!

The Montessori Approach to Toys

In a Montessori-inspired environment, toys are:

Purposeful -  Each item supports a specific skill or area of development
Limited in number -  To avoid overstimulation
Beautiful and engaging -  Inviting children to use them
Rotated regularly -  Keeping interest fresh without adding clutter

You won’t find overflowing bins or noisy, flashing toys. Instead,
you’ll see calm, orderly spaces   that encourage focus and exploration.

How to Apply This at Home (Without a Complete Overhaul)

You don’t need to throw everything away to see the benefits. Small, intentional changes can make a big difference!

Start with a Simple Toy Rotation

Store some toys out of sight and rotate them every few weeks. This keeps your child engaged without increasing quantity.

Choose Quality Over Quantity

Select toys that are
open-ended (blocks, puzzles, art materials), durable and well-made. Keep the toys aligned with your child’s developmental stage.

Create a Calm, Organized Space

Display toys on
low shelves or in baskets so your child can easily see and access them.

A tidy environment supports a tidy mind.

Observe Your Child

Pay attention to which toys your child returns to again and again.
These are the ones that truly support their learning.

Less Really Can Be More

When children are given more meaningful choices, something powerful happens. They slow down. They concentrate. They create. They GROW.

By simplifying your child’s environment, you’re not taking something away; You’re making space for deeper learning and more joy!

At
Eden Prairie Montessori Learning Center we see this every day: children don’t need more toys. They need the right ones and the freedom to fully explore them.

Minimalism isn’t about deprivation: it’s about intention.

When we thoughtfully choose what we place in front of our children, we support not just how they play, but how they think and engage with the world. The simplest environments can create the richest learning experiences.
