At Eden Prairie Montessori we embrace celebrations that are rich in meaning and rooted in connection. One of the most heartfelt rituals in our Casa classrooms is the Montessori Birthday Walk, often called the “Walk Around the Sun.” It's far more than a typical birthday celebration. Instead, it allows children to experience time, growth, and community in a tangible and memorable way...
The process begins with a simple yet beautiful setup. A candle symbolizing the Sun is placed in the center of a circle, and labels for all the months may be arranged around it, creating the path of Earth’s orbit. The birthday child carefully takes a globe (representing Earth) in hand and begins their journey: one full walk around the “Sun” for each year of their life. As the child walks, classmates may sing a song like “The Earth goes round the Sun,” and the voice of the teacher or a parent shares a cherished memory from that year.
At Eden Prairie Montessori, this beautifully aligns with our student‑centered, hands‑on philosophy. Just as our prepared environments support children’s independence, the Birthday Walk gives them a physical and emotional experience of their journey moving from infancy to each new phase with grace and awareness. It reminds each child that they are growing in their own time, guided and supported as part of a community.
Throughout the walk, the storytelling pauses at each orbit (representing a year) so that special photos or mementos can be shared. Whether it’s a first step, a favorite toy, or the moment they first said “mama,” these stories enrich understanding of growth as part of a life lived in relationship to family, to nature, and to school. It’s a celebration of life, of time and of belonging. These are all key parts of the Montessori vision!
Once a lap for each year of the child's life is complete, the class gathers together, often singing “Happy Birthday” while the child blows out the candle. It is not a gift‑focused moment, but a softly glowing tribute to each child’s life and place in the world.
At Eden Prairie, we believe these moments plant seeds of self‑awareness and gratitude that grow throughout childhood.
In our classrooms at Eden Prairie Montessori this tradition comes naturally. Our Montessori adults create calm, respectful spaces where each child can feel honored. It reflects our belief in freedom within limits, in community, and in honoring the child’s individual path.
