Dear Eden Prairie Montessori Families-

Welcome to our new blog and website!

October is almost over and November is almost here. The leaves are almost off the trees and… was that snow we saw last night? Fall never seems to last long enough but we have a little time left before the snow really starts flying.

First, a quick reminder about Halloween!  Tomorrow the Children should arrive by 9:45am. They are welcome to arrive in costume or they may change at school. Either way, they should have a change of clothes. We’ll head out at 10am for a parade to our neighbors. They look forward to this every year and yes, some of them spoil us with candy. However, our teachers will collect it and distribute it evenly between our children to take home (in cute little bags they made). All children (infants through Kindergarten) are welcome to come, regardless of their normal schedule. And parents are welcome as well to walk with us or/and take pictures.

And speaking of Halloween, the “witching hour” is here this year! Remember that daylight savings happens in the wee hours between Halloween and November 1st. So let your clocks fall back and enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

IMPORTANT: Payment for pictures and/or the pictures you don’t want need to be returned to the office BY NOVEMBER 6th. Pictures not received by this time will be charged by Lifetouch for the whole packet. They are being sent back to Lifetouch that day and we cannot wait on late payments/packages.

We are really starting to see a shift in seasons here. As the weather dips colder and colder, the children will be needing warmer clothing to go outdoors. Outdoor play is very important for the children’s development and is actually a requirement by the state. It is good for all of us to get outside to get away from the cold and flu bugs to get some fresh air and exercise! So as long as the temperature is 20 degrees or above (and of course it’s not blowing snow), we will be going outside. Once we start to see snow stick to the ground and the temperature starts to hover around freezing, please start sending the following items with your child:

And PLEASE LABEL ALL OF YOUR CHILDREN’S CLOTHES. With all the extra outdoor clothing, it is especially important that we know what belongs to what child.

And speaking of the cold and flu bugs, that season is upon us. It is always a great idea for you and your child to get the flu shot. But there are many strains of “the flu” and despite our best efforts, you may still find that you or your child feel under the weather. Just a reminder that if your child has a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, vomits, has diarrhea or an inexplicable rash, they must stay home until they have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours without medication. And if the have anything communicable, we need a doctor’s clearance to return to school (usually 24 hrs after starting medication).

Now on to some of the fun events we have planned in the next few months! On Wednesday November 18th, we will be having our annual Thanksgiving luncheon. This is a wonderful time for all of us to come together as a school and remember what we are thankful for… and eat some delicious food! We’ll be sending out the sign up email as that date draws closer.

Preschool families, mark your calendars! We have the dates for our Winter Programs! Preschool 1 (Ms Keerun’s class) will take place on Monday, December 14th and Preschool 2 (Ms Karen’s class) will take place on Tuesday, December 15th. Both will begin at 6:30pm on their respective nights! More details to follow.

A quick note on birthday celebrations. We love to celebrate and we want to recognize each child’s special day. You are more than welcome to bring in a treat of some kind to share. However, we need to know in advance what you are bringing in. A week is ideal. That way we can be sure to inform the parents in that classroom that there will be a special treat. Look for our new “Attention” signs outside the door to indicate that a treat is being served that day. Pizza parties will be announced via email as well as on the signs outside the door. Please understand that pizza parties are on a “first come, first serve” basis and should be limited to 1-2 per month. We will do everything we can to make sure your child can celebrate the way they wish, but know that your first option may not be available. And remember, all treats must be store bought!

Don’t forget to like us on Facebook ! We’ve been posting fun pictures of some of our seasonal art lately! No pictures of the children yet- we will never post your child’s picture without your permission.

As always, if you should have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to let us know!

Sincerely,

Eden Prairie Montessori

Let’s talk about one of the best things about toddlers (aside from their adorable vocabulary and unmatched snack enthusiasm): they love to help. Truly. Whether they’re dragging a broom twice their size across the floor or insisting on stirring the pancake batter, they’re all in. To them, daily tasks aren’t “chores” - they are important jobs! Real, grown-up work. Work that says, you matter and you belong here. But if your once-eager toddler has morphed into a bigger kid who suddenly seems less thrilled about helping out, you’re not alone. As children grow, they become more independent and focused on their own interests. It’s totally natural and actually a beautiful sign of their development! Still, that doesn’t mean the desire to help disappears. We just have to nurture it a little differently. Here are some simple, Montessori-inspired ways to keep that helpful spirit alive as your child grows...

Toilet Learning: Potty Training The Montessori Way
by Shonali Harrison 27 March 2025
Transitioning from diapers to using the toilet is a significant milestone for both children and their families. Dr. Maria Montessori acknowledged that children are continually striving for independence, which includes mastering toilet use. The Montessori approach to this developmental stage emphasizes the child's learning process over traditional training methods.
