"Establishing lasting peace is the work of education..."

- Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori believed that children are the foundation of a more peaceful world. She saw education as a powerful tool for shaping future generations who value respect, empathy, and harmony. At Eden Prairie Montessori, peace education is not just a lesson but a way of life, integrated into daily routines and interactions.

"I love the culture we have cultivated at Eden Prairie Montessori. It is truly a joy being in this environment which is of love, peace and harmony," says our Director, Shonali Harrison. “The Montessori method places great value on children’s social interactions. We build on the ways their parents have modeled graciousness and courtesy, present how to be polite in social interactions, and demonstrate how to behave peacefully in general."

Montessori classrooms are designed to foster a culture of respect toward oneself, others, and the environment. Teachers model kindness and patience, guiding children to communicate their feelings, listen to others, and resolve conflicts peacefully. Activities such as the “peace table” provide a dedicated space where children can express emotions, use calming techniques, and find solutions together. At Eden Prairie Montessori we use special objects to teach our children how to get along peacefully in our classrooms. Whenever two of them have a conflict, either child can get the peace rose off the shelf and offer it to the other. It’s a marvelous way to say you’re sorry and want to make amends before you’re able to verbalize diplomacy.

Another key element of Montessori peace education is teaching children about the world’s diverse cultures and perspectives. Through geography lessons, learning a second language, stories and hands-on materials, children develop an appreciation for global interconnectedness. This understanding nurtures empathy and helps children see themselves as part of a broader, peaceful community.

By practicing cooperation, problem-solving, and mindfulness from an early age, Montessori students develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. They grow into individuals who value compassion and collaboration, carrying these lessons into their families, workplaces, and communities.

Montessori education plants the seeds for a more peaceful future, one child at a time!

Let’s talk about one of the best things about toddlers (aside from their adorable vocabulary and unmatched snack enthusiasm): they love to help. Truly. Whether they’re dragging a broom twice their size across the floor or insisting on stirring the pancake batter, they’re all in. To them, daily tasks aren’t “chores” - they are important jobs! Real, grown-up work. Work that says, you matter and you belong here. But if your once-eager toddler has morphed into a bigger kid who suddenly seems less thrilled about helping out, you’re not alone. As children grow, they become more independent and focused on their own interests. It’s totally natural and actually a beautiful sign of their development! Still, that doesn’t mean the desire to help disappears. We just have to nurture it a little differently. Here are some simple, Montessori-inspired ways to keep that helpful spirit alive as your child grows...
