What is Montessori? The Montessori method is a method of education for children that was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the 1900's. Dr. Maria Montessori was the first female physician in Italy and had a passion for researching on how children learn. She observed that children learned through all sensory applications and experience instead of just by visual sense. Therefore, the hands-on materials that the Montessori method uses are specially and scientifically designed, and is unique to Montessori education. Children develop fine motor skills, concentration and succeed in working independently. The Montessori philosophy promotes and recognizes that each child develops at his or her own pace. The teacher, or better known as the "Montessori adult", will be the facilitator. The Montessori adult is also the person responsible for carefully preparing the environment in which the child carries out his or her purposeful activity.
